Breakthrough in 3D-Printed Skin Grafts: Scientists Unleash Hair Follicles for Growth.

Scientists 3D Print Hair Follicles on Lab-Grown Skin

This technique is a significant step forward in the development of skin grafts and drug testing. Scientists at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute have 3D printed hair follicles on human skin tissue in the laboratory. It is the first time that researchers have used this technology to create hair follicles. Hair follicles play a key role in skin healing.

The findings, published in Science Advances journal, could have applications in regenerative medicines and drug testing. However, it will be several years before engineers can create skin grafts with hair.

Our work is a proof of concept that 3D-bioprinting can create hair follicles in a reproducible, highly accurate way. The study was led by Pankaj Karande Ph.D. an associate professor in chemical and biological engineering and member of the Shirley Ann Jackson Ph.D. Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies at Rensselaer.
