Cambridge Researchers Study Brain Disorders by Expanding Blood Vessels

Cambridge team creates blood vessels to study brain diseases

The disease of the cerebral small vessels is responsible for nearly half of all dementias worldwide.

Revolutionary Drug-Activated Protein Strengthens Memory Function

Drug-Activated protein boosts memory

Researchers have made a breakthrough by genetically altering the LIMK1 (a protein crucial to memory) so that it can be controlled by rapamycin.

This study shows that it is possible to improve memory by manipulating the synaptic plasticity of the brain.

The engineered protein improved memory in animal models that had age-related cognitive decline. This could lead to innovative treatments for neuropsychiatric disorders like dementia. This ‘chemogenetic approach’, which combines genetics and chemical compounds, opens up new avenues for neurological research and treatment.

New Drug-Like Molecule (MIC) Extends Lifespan and Enhances Mitochondrial Function

A new drug-like molecule increases lifespan in worms, improves pathology and enhances function in mammalian muscles cells

Healthy mitochondria are the organelles in our cells that produce energy. This is true for humans as well as C. elegans (a small, short-lived, nematode used to study aging).

Researchers at Buck Institute identified a new druglike molecule which keeps mitochondria healthy through mitophagy. Mitophagy is a process in which damaged mitochondria are removed and recycled by multicellular organisms. The compound MIC is a natural substance that has extended the lifespan of C. elegans and ameliorated neurodegenerative disease in C. elegans models. It also improved mitochondrial function within mouse muscle cells. The results will be published in Nature Aging’s November 13th, 2023 edition.

A defect in mitophagy may be responsible for many age-related illnesses. It is linked to neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and heart failure. It also influences metabolic disorders like obesity and type 2 diabetics.

Synthetic ‘Super Melanin” Cream Effective in Treating Sunburn and Chemical Burns

Super Melanin heals skin injuries from sunburns, chemical burns

Imagine a cream that can heal skin damage caused by environmental toxins or sunlight. Scientists at Northwestern University have developed a biomimetic, synthetic melanin that could be used to heal skin damage.

In a recent study, scientists have shown that their synthetic, melanin mimicking the melanin found in the human skin can be applied topically on injured skin to accelerate wound healing. These effects are seen both on the skin and throughout the body.

Scientists said that when applied as a cream, synthetic melanin protects the skin from the sun and heals the skin damaged by sun damage or chemical burning. The technology works by scavenging the free radicals that are produced when skin is injured, such as by sunburn. Unchecked free radical activity can damage cells, resulting in skin cancer and aging.
