Alzheimer Therapy Advances: Focused Ultrasound Drug Delivery Shows Promise

Alzheimer’s Disease and Focused Ultrasound Delivery

This article is part of an ongoing series about the latest developments in Regenerative Medicine. This article discusses the latest advances in Alzheimer’s treatment.

In 1999, I defined the term regenerative medicine to include a collection of interventions designed to restore normal function in tissues and organs that have been damaged by disease or trauma. I include the full spectrum of cell-based therapies and biomechanical interventions, as well as chemical, gene and protein-based medicine.

A combination of focused ultrasonic therapy and a medication recently approved could be the best treatment we have for Alzheimer’s to date. In the New England Journal of Medicine Dr. Ali Rezai, along with colleagues from West Virginia University, describe a method to reduce cerebral amyloid beta load, a neurodegeneration biomarker, in Alzheimer’s patients. Although still in its early stages, this combination treatment could help millions of people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease in the future.
